I want to start by asking you this question. How do you really feel about your business?

Because I’m pretty certain that your business means the world to you. I bet that it fills you with significance and purpose and possibility; and don’t get me started on all the relationships and connections you now have as a result of it. So, it’s pretty dam special right?

Ok so here’s another one for you – what would it mean to you if your biz was delivering you real results and you could contribute to the family income, all whilst staying at home with the kids? It would be AMAZING wouldn’t it? I imagine that it would be like a dream come true…

So, now let me ask you this, how much recognition, time and appreciation does your business get from those around you? How much support are you offered? What sort of investment are you putting behind making this happen for you and your family?

Because if you are so emotionally invested, and have such an awesome vision for your family, naturally one would imagine you’re going ALL IN to make this happen… right?

Wrong.

It pains me to say this but for many of you – the answers here tend to be that your business doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, nor the support, time or investment it needs to really flourish.

But most importantly it begs the question why?

Because if this biz is truly something that you want for yourself and means so much to you – then why is it that it’s not being taken seriously by those around you?

And this is where I want to deliver you a real wake-up call Mama. Because the onus is actually on you here.

Whaaaat?

Yep I have an important lesson for you today and I want you to really wear it.

The response you’re currently getting from those around you is a likely a result of your current communication to them – and what you’re putting out there.

Plain and simple – you get what you project.

What do I really mean by this?

• If you project doubt – you will see doubt from others.
• If you promote your biz as a side hustle – that’s how others will think of it.
• If you show uncertainty in investing in your business – you will see uncertainty in supporting it.
• If you judge yourself for spending time on your business – others will judge you for it.
• If you try and DIY everything, you’ll get DIY results.
• If you don’t think you can – that’s what others will believe too.

And lastly if you don’t believe your dreams are worth pursuing – how can someone else?

Yep, that last one is a big one.

Ultimately ladies, if you want people to take your biz seriously then it absolutely needs to come from you first.

So right now I want you stand up and take responsibility for where you’re at currently – and where you really want to be.

Next I want you to go on an uncovery mission and work out exactly what you’ve been consciously or unconsciously putting out there about yourself and your biz and what needs to change.

To help make this easier for you I’ve created a couple of exercises for you to follow below:

Exercise Number 1

Grab a piece of paper and write out the following when it comes to how you’ve been feeling about…

• Yourself
• Your abilities
• Your biz knowledge
• Your biz itself and how you treat it
• How far or little you’ve travelled on your biz journey to date
• Where you want to get to
• Your confidence

Exercise Number 2

Now, I want you to work on every single negative belief or doubt that you’ve identified as part of Exercise Number 1 and reframe it with something positive… with something that will be far more empowering in delivering you the results that you want for yourself in your biz.

Example:

I feel bad about following my dreams because of the impact it has on my family (i.e. time, money).

Reframe:

The short-term impact of following my dreams will lead to a second income and a truly nurturing lifestyle for the good of my family. Furthermore, I’ll be more full as a person and a better wife, mother and human by filling my cup too.

I deserve this. My family deserves this.

Example

My competitors are amazing. How can I ever compare? Who do I think I am?

Reframe:

If they can do it, I can do it.

Ladies there will always be fear and doubt but we get to choose if we buy into it and give it weight. And we get to decide whether we let others believe the same of us.

Lead by example. Take yourself seriously. Back yourself.

Imagine what life would be like if you dared to dream, dared to believe and acted as if. If you told the world you could, you would, and you will. What response do you think you’d get then?

As I sat there working away on my computer as per normal, trying to fit in a million and one emails whilst dinner is on the stove and the pile of washing is staring right at me I started to wonder what this sudden silence was that had come across my household. To most silence would be a sign of peace, solitude and alone time but silence in my household just like many is the meaning of utter destruction by my children.
I called out to them both with no response to only find both my children, girls aged 6 and 8 had taken my blackboard and table out that I commonly can be found lugging around at markets when promoting my business, into the driveway. They were both sitting there patiently on a chair each speaking to those who walked by. I was intrigued and slightly angry at this point ‘how dare they just take my stuff and not ask permission to go at the front’. As I approached them the sign stating ‘cheese samwhih’ and ‘hot cross bun’ for sale – $1 each.

It kicked in, the total mum guilt for wanting to kill them 5 minutes earlier to utter admiration for their beautiful little entrepreneurial skills. I asked them ‘girls what are you doing’ which they responded ‘we are selling things like you do mum’. Wait a minute – this was sounding like my children actually saw me as a positive role model. It can’t be. I am one of those Mums at the park with my laptop out, answering emails on my phone whilst pretending to listen to them and the one that is telling them (or screaming at them) to go to sleep so I can get work done in the office.

It dawned on me, well heck… I am a bloody good influence. I am strong, independent and motivated. I am goal orientated and I work hard. And most of all I have a dream and believe in myself to achieve it.

It was that day I felt connected to my children, my family and realised that I would not be the only mum that every day kicks herself with mum guilt and made me realise I just want to say to you all ‘Mums with Hustle’ that we are bloody amazing. Through our actions we are raising children that realise that in order to get where you want in life, you have to work for it. We are creating children that will create jobs and in turn we are teaching them to live independent and stable lives.

So today, pat yourself on the back and know next time that gut wrenching feeling of I am s**t parent comes to surface, punch it in the face and be confident that you are an amazing example and there is a huge fellow tribe of fellow biz mums who have your back!

Nataly Tormey founded social enterprise WONDERWOMAN Children in 2015.
It is a project of love and labour that developed from Nataly’s experience of being a mother of two premature unwell babes, neonatal nanny, nurse, public speaker and first aid educator. Those stellar businesses in ‘our’ industries who seemingly hop out of bed every morning, looking like the ‘perfect fairy’ helped them get ready (cough – TRACY HARRIS!!). Eating a big fat bowl of ambition for breakfast, followed by a side of motivation; they spend the rest of the day ripping a new one into all they do but in the most amazingly, fabulously, on-point way that you were just about to….wait….damn it! She beat me to it!!!!!!!!

Hi hustlers! I’m Deb from Spreading Roomers. I’m the authenticity lover who creatively coaches businesses in the interiors and lifestyle sectors on how best to market their unique brand. I’m outside of the box and I like to talk about ‘core values’ a lot. Today however; I want to talk to you about competition and why I believe it’s a good thing.

WHAT IS COMPETTYTIVENESS?

…and why do you need to cut that sucker loose?
I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched someone in my field kick goals like its grand final day, and I’ll be the first to admit, in my very early days I likely invested way too much time and energy concerning myself with what they might do next (inner psychic abilities – check! Stalking abilities – check! slightly unhinged – check!).
What’s insane about this pathway is that it’s not a positive one. It creates doubt, insecurity, comparisonitis (that’s for another blog post), fear, but most of all – total dilution of your own brand story, and that equals – really bad for your business!!

BUT I WAS JUST ABOUT TO DO THAT – I MUST DISLIKE THIS PERSON FOREVER!!

Right? Absolutely not!!
So they beat you to it; good for them. If you had the ‘idea’ but did nothing about it, it makes total sense to blame someone that did? [side note : this blog is called ‘compettytiveness’ not ‘copycats’ – that’s another blog post].

Or perhaps it’s a conspiracy. Yeah, that sounds about right, it’s the universe's way of telling you you’re not cut out for this. Where were you? What if it’s the universe's way of providing you with an industry GPS? Like a navigation system that equips you with learning, invaluable observation, market research and friendship.

DID SHE JUST SAY FRIENDSHIP?

I know on paper it seems unlikely, and if I were to be brutally honest, it still requires a solid inner radar on approach and perhaps a little skipping around the periphery before you start exchanging apple pie recipes and 4 ingredient cocktails (but that’s another blog post!). But; once you are satisfied that this individual is on the level, then proceed with arms open ladies!!
Firstly; you have absolutely nothing to lose. They are already your competitor. You are already loosely on opposing sides, but here’s the thing so many (in particular) women in business totally glean over and that is you have NO idea how amazing THEY think YOU are!

LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE

It’s the energetic law of the universe. ENERGY aligns where it feels most strong. You will be compelled toward certain individuals and those toward you so follow your instincts on this. Once you have cut through the small talk of babies, setting up business, or the overuse of the snapchat flower crown, you will quickly move onto the really chewy stuff – what you do well. This is GROWTH conversation ladies!

It's’ a very simple but clever way for you to quickly audit and assess your own business model – remembering you are unique to you, you believe in authenticity and you applaud those who do it well. This is not an exercise in stealing ideas, products or service. It’s a gentlewoman's agreement to respect and use each other’s knowledge, experience, failures, successes and growth as additional structure and steering.

BENEFITS OF A COMPADRE-ISM

Forgetting for a second that you get save precious ‘air time’ having to constantly explain your day, situation or issue (as they just get it – sorry husbands or wives – but FINALLY!!!) I’ve highlighted 13 ways that befriending your competition can be of benefit to business owners :

1. MINDSET PART 1

This is the school yard dilemma all over again but the bigger person actually does rise above petty to and fro and quickly realises it’s in THEIR best interest to run a less mentality exhausting journey. It’s a cleansing!

2. BRAND STORY

How do you propose to author your own authentic voice, content and brand without having any understanding of your competitor’s. This is also why SWOT can be so invaluable.

3. COLLABORATION

The best way to compete is alongside someone who makes you ‘lift’ (not talking kg’s here!)

You get unrivalled feedback where you best require it – gold!

5. SUPPORT

Being an entrepreneur can be lonely with few you can trust; now you can.

6. ACCOUNTABILITY

It’s like an unspoken spell but suddenly you’d rather cut your own ear off then drop the ball. Motivational lapses and self-doubt self-sabotages become less frequent.

7. GROWTH

The sooner you can face your fears and understand your competition, the better equipped you will be to identifying your own strengths and gaps in the current market.

8. OPPORTUNITY

You no longer assume that everyone does it better than you and you begin to realise you have something fabulous to offer.

Word of mouth IS actually the Holy Grail of marketing. People talk. Make it worth their while. A recommend from a fellow industry player is premium in the rep stakes.

If you were swamped and unable to accommodate all the ins and outs of small business, who would you ask for recommends that you felt you could really rely on?

Being able to guide others who look up to you is how this revolving door of give and take works. It will build your self-esteem and fine tune your own processes.
The key to being great at what you do not only comes from putting in the hard yards but also by accepting how great other people can be too. As a biz mum, you’re already savvy when it comes to social media. You’re all over Facebook and you’re totally nailing Instagram. Heck you might even be using Snapchat. But how many of you have a presence on LinkedIn?
I’d be willing to bet not too many of you – am I right?
You’ve probably heard that LinkedIn is only for job seekers or people working in corporate. You might also think it sounds incredibly dull! Granted, you’re far less likely to see posts about celebrities, cute cuddly animals or what your friends ate for dinner, but don’t let that put you off. LinkedIn is every bit as useful for the small biz owner as it is for anyone else.
No doubt you’re also wondering where you would possibly find the time needed – even if you could muster up the enthusiasm – to manage another social media platform. Believe me, I get it! I know as a biz mum, you’re already juggling work with running your home, while trying to grow your business. But what if I told you that LinkedIn has the potential to grow your business for you?
No matter whether you’re a service based business, a product based business, or a bricks and mortar business, LinkedIn is a useful platform to be on. Let me tell you why I think so.

1. An opportunity to tell your story

When someone does a google search on your name, your LinkedIn profile will usually be in the top three results. So not having a LinkedIn profile is a missed opportunity when it comes to personal branding.
Potential customers, suppliers, stockists or anyone else considering doing business with you, will likely check you out online first. LinkedIn is the perfect place for people to learn more about you and has the potential to influence whether or not they make contact.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking LinkedIn is simply a version of your resume. It’s not – or at least it shouldn’t be!
It’s a place for you to tell your story.

So .… with that in mind, it’s a great idea to start pondering the following:

• Why you do what you do?
• How you do it?
• What makes you different from everyone else?

Your story could well be the one thing that sets you apart from others in your niche.
Of course you’ll need to know who you’re telling your story to before you start the writing process. Knowing who your ideal audience is, what their struggles are and how you can help them, will allow you to be more relatable and authentic.
The LinkedIn summary is the perfect place to grab their attention and to demonstrate your unique promise of value.

2. Research, Research, Research

LinkedIn is a great place to find both people and businesses you might like to connect with. Whether you’re a yoga teacher, you sell children’s clothes or you provide social media management services; with a network of over 467 million members, you’re likely to find the people you want to do business with on LinkedIn. It is the most up-to-date database of professional contacts available that you can freely access.
The advanced search functionality lets you very quickly narrow down your search to find the type of person you’re hoping to connect with. You are able to search by key words, location, company and industry, amongst other things, to find the right people.
Once you’ve found them, don’t be afraid to send them a connection request. Remember to personalise this. You’ll likely get a better response if you take the time to craft something a little more meaningful. Plus it will set you apart from everyone else, because so few people take the time to do this.

3. Building Relationships and Trust

Networking and building relationships is what LinkedIn is all about – but like most social media platforms, it’s usually a longer term strategy. So don’t expect to create a profile and get instant results. You have to put some work in. Rather than go in “guns blazing” asking for a sale or a meeting with someone you’ve just connected to, take the time to create the “know, like and trust” factor.
How do you do this?
Increasing your visibility by being a regular in their newsfeed is a good place to start. This needn’t take up a lot of time. You can usually stay top of mind in less than 10 minutes a day by interacting with your connections’ status updates. Liking and commenting with something meaningful, or sharing their content will start to get you noticed.
That said, don’t be afraid to start a conversation with your new connection. After all, LinkedIn is all about building your network and you can’t do that if you don’t talk to them.

4. Adding Value & Getting Value

You might already be blogging for your biz, and if so sharing your content on LinkedIn will help to get your knowledge in front of more of the right people. Adding value to your network with content that will resonate with them is so important when it comes to creating trust.
You can do this by either sharing a link to your blog post in the status update, or you could write an article and publish it directly into the LinkedIn platform. The latter will definitely help your content to get in front of way more eyeballs.
But if writing isn’t your thing, don’t worry. You can be lazy! Simply curate other people’s content, relevant to your audience and share it as an up-date. Again this will serve to keep you top of mind.
Joining targeted interesting and useful groups where you can be active is also a great strategy. Not only are LinkedIn groups a great place to be helpful they’re also a great place to learn. LinkedIn allows you to join 100 groups. Obviously that’s way too many for you to be active in. It does, however, give you access to more people and can increase your visibility, if you participate in conversations and share relevant content.
As an added bonus you can send 15 messages to fellow group members that you are not connected to each month.
So there you have it, four reasons why you should add LinkedIn to your marketing strategy.
