What is the essence of your business? With Mandy Hunt (Kitsentials)
Tell us about the first steps you took in starting your business?
I did a lot of research, and determined what the essence of the business was. I wanted to keep things handmade in Australia, so that started off a chain of events such as finding a seamstress, fabric suppliers etc. I have actually changed the business slightly from its conception; I think it's important for other Mumpreneurs to know sometimes you have to be adaptable to your audience and be prepared to change.
What is a personal habit that you believe contributes to your success?
I don't give up. I may not always get the result I want first time, but that just makes me more determined to keep trying until I do.
Give us 3 tips on how to use Instagram like a boss!
I'm still learning everyday about what's right for me but here are a few:
- Being authentic is important; what is right for someone else's brand may not be right for yours.
- You might have a bit of trial and error, but be consistent in your look and feel.
- Understand what your brand is, and how your instagram pictures fit into that.
How do you balance #mumlife and business life?
I don't think I did that very well in the beginning, it was all so over whelming, and if I wasn't thinking about the business I was sewing or dragging my children around to fittings. Now when I'm with my kids, I'm with them. If I have to do something quickly I do it, but I try and keep things seperated. At the end of the day, I started this business so I could continue being with my kids as much as possible, so if the business grows slowly because of that, that's OK. I want new Mum's starting out to know it can be done. There really is only our little family unit to get by with, and when the kids are sick and my husbands away it's hard, but you just need to put your head down and get on with it, even if it is in the wee hours of the morning.
What one piece of actionable advice would you give someone just starting out?
Don't be afraid to adapt and change, sometimes you don't know what works until it doesn't.
