Product Photography and Styling Tips for the Busy Entrepreneur
Product photography is everywhere! It’s on every social media platform (especially Instagram!) and it’s on every website that offers products. And guess what? Roughly, 99% of all purchases come from an emotional response… That’s HUGE!
Now, I know we don’t have many Mums With Hustle Podcast episodes where we chat about product photography (though we do have this awesome episode with Nicole Ward that is all about flat lays!).
Since product photography is essential to growing your business, I thought I’d invite a today’s guest onto the podcast to share her insight and knowledge when it comes to product photography.
Today’s guest is Emily Sorenson! Emily is a Founding Member of the Social Method Society which means she has been a Member from the very beginning when we launched with just the promise of something awesome.
Not only that, but Emily is the lead photographer and creative eye behind Emily K Creative. She provides an all encompassing product photography service from deep etched stock images to location photoshoots. And for those wanting to DIY, she creates lightroom presets that make photo editing seamless, cohesive and simple.
During this episode, Emily is going to talk about her Shift Competition entry and how her mindset has shifted, along with the low-down on all things product photography and how to DIY your own photography to make scroll-stopping content.
Let’s get into it!
Key Takeaways:
>> [0:40] Thank you for joining me for this week’s episode of the Mums With Hustle Podcast. My name is Tracy Harris, your host, and these episodes come out weekly on Monday. If you’ve been listening for awhile I want to thank you! It’s so amazing to have such a vast community of women who are ambitious and very heart-centered in how they show up online for their audience.
>> [3:15] I want to remind everyone who is listening today that our Podcast Review giveaway is actually coming to an end in about 10 days, so if you haven’t left me a review on iTunes please make sure you do so along with your Instagram handle. This will allow us to hit you up in the DMs and get your address, should you be selected as one of our many winners to receive some snail mail from me!
>> [4:03] Emily is a Founding Member of the Social Method Society which means she has been a Member from the very beginning when we launched with just the promise of something awesome.
>> [5:05] During this episode, Emily is going to talk about her Shift Competition entry and how her mindset has shifted, along with the low-down on all things product photography and how to DIY your own photography to make scroll-stopping content.
>> [7:12] Being a working mum in the corporate setting, Emily didn’t feel as supported once she returned to work. So she decided to make her own money! Emily has had her business for a year.
>> [10:45] Every year we have a Shift Competition and it is an exercise of self-reflection. It’s about recognizing the shifts that you’ve had! This year, Emily won the Shift Competition because we were so moved by her entry.
>> [12:45] Emily has experienced significant mindset growth and she has up-leveled her business massively.
What was Emily’s big shift?
- Emily started to be courageous by developing two new streams of income
and she backed herself with bigger package offerings. - She has also started talking better about herself as a business owner.
- Emily also invested back into her business for new equipment and didn’t view it as a loss.
>> [16:19] Emily offers Lightroom presets! They allow you to put a filter on your photo and completely customise it. These presets make editing really quick and consistent. Check out Emily’s Lightroom presets HERE.
>> [18:45] You should always aim to share scroll stopping images on Instagram.
What makes a scroll stopping image?
- Clear, bright and swoon worthy.
- Make your product stand out!
- Remember – your photo is what makes people stop their scroll to check you out then read more about you/your product.
>> [19:30] For entrepreneurs wanting to do their own photography, you should consider these three tips.
Emily's Best Product Photography Tips
- A stash of props to compliment your product or brand colours.
- Access to natural light (such as a nice big window or covered veranda)
- The ability to edit photos (such as using Lightroom and presets)
>> [23:34] Lightroom is similar to Photoshop (you can use it on desktop or mobile). Presets make editing easier because they're almost a one-click edit and can be used over and over to create a consistent look across your photos. Typically, the only aspects you'll have to tweak is the exposure and the white balance.
>> [25:35] The first year in the Social Method Society is doing the inner work. Emily doesn’t think she would be where she is now without the Social Method Society.
>> [27:08] Thank you so much for joining me on this episode of the Mums With Hustle Podcast, Emily. You can check her out on Instagram at @emilykcreative or www.emilykcreative.com.au.
>> [27:37] If you want are wanting to know more about the Social Method Society or being made aware of when I do open up the doors for the next intake, then the best thing you can do is head to socialmethodsociety.com because the doors are not always open. If you want to know when we open next please make sure you head over to socialmethodsociety.com.
>> [28:16] Thank you so much for joining me for this episode of the Mums With Hustle Podcast. I’d love to know if you plan on hosting your own DIY Product Photography session. If you are or if you do, please tag me in your Stories or in your images @mumswithhustle and I’ll come cheer you on!
